3 Steps to Calm

I know how busy you are at this time of year and how stressful it can get, so here are 3 quick easy tips for instant calm:

1. Ujjayi Pranayama (victorious breath)

Gently constrict the glottis (the space between the vocal chords at the base of the throat) so that the breath makes a soft oceanic sound as you inhale and exhale. Not only will this calm you it will also help sharpen your focus if you’re feeling frazzled.

2. Invert (get upside down!)
Now this can be a downward facing dog or as simple as sitting in a chair, feet and knees wide and head down….let your arms hang down too. If you have the space and time you might also like to try Viparita Karani (legs up the wall pose). Basically just get your head below the level of your heart.

3. Close your eyes
And count slowly to 10 and then back down to one. Our eyes take in an estimated 10 million bits per second – no wonder just the simple act of closing them quietens the mind a little.

Better still do all three at once!
